From the Editor:

Puppy Still Wanted

As I mentioned last month, I lost my beloved dog Ashke last fall. I have been recovering, and am now ready to welcome another dog into our home. I don't have any specific breed in mind, just looking for a medium to large size dog. Mutts are wonderful!

I'd especially love to find a puppy raised on raw or farm-fresh food, so I am putting this out to you. Keep your eyes open in your travels around Oregon. I am willing to drive and willing to pay for the perfect puppy.

If anyone knows of any puppies or a pregnant dog, please let me know.

Upcoming Classes!

We are planning some fermentation classes in March and April. Watch for details!

Please Send Feedback

What do you think of the Eugene Chapter events? What events you would like to attend? What do you think of our current schedule? Our potlucks are the second Monday of each month and DVDs are on either the third or fourth Friday? What days/times work best for you? (Note: If you like our current schedule be sure to vote for it, because if there are more suggestions for another day we might change it!) Do you have suggestions for a community food preparation event? Take a moment to share your thoughts and ideas about Eugene Chapter activities (email: info@krautpounder.com).

"The Popcorn Review"

"The Use of Proteolytic Enzymes Against Cancer:
The Origins of an Idea"

by Nicholas Gonzalez

Friday, February 19, 2010
6:30 to 8:30 PM
(Please note earlier starting time)

Location:
Market of Choice
67 West 29th, Eugene
Upstairs in the Community Room

This DVD was recorded at the 2009 Wise Traditions Conference.

"In his talk, Dr. Gonzalez will trace the evolution of the idea, beginning 100 years ago, that pancreatic proteolytic enzymes, above and beyond their well known digestive function, serve as our bodies' main defense against cancer and are an effective anti-cancer supplement. He will discuss in some detail the work of Dr. John Beard, the pioneering English biologist who in elegant meticulous detail first proposed the enzyme hypothesis, and who along the way first identified stem cells and their probable role as the progenitor cancer cell—some 60 years before stem cells would be "rediscovered" in the 1960s, and 90 years before cancer researchers would propose that dysregulated stem cells are the culprit in malignant disease. Dr. Gonzalez will bring the enzyme concept up to date, presenting the experiences of Dr. William Kelley during the 1970s and 80s, and his own 20 year-experience using enzymes as a cancer treatment in his research studies and in his private practice. Throughout the talk, Dr. Gonzalez will emphasize the scientific support for the enzyme approach"

RSVP:
We need to have at least 5 people RSVP in order to reserve the space at Market of Choice, and there is a maximum of 25 seats available. So I urge you to RSVP (info@krautpounder.com) if you think you will be attending. If your plans change feel free to just show up.

We are requesting a $5-10 donation to the Eugene Chapter at the door.
(No one should miss a showing because of cost, so a sliding scale for low-income people is $1-4 or volunteer to help the Eugene Chapter).

Community Food Preparation Event

Old Fashioned Fat Rendering Party

Saturday, February 27, 2010
1:30 to 3:30 PM
Location:
At the home of Dr. Teri Sue Wright, DVM
2919 McKendrick St.
(in south Eugene)

Directions:
"South Chambers straight through the 28th St intersection (blinking light). Take a right onto McLean (3rd street passed that intersection). Take the 1st right on McKendrick. My house is about 8 houses down (1/2 way) on the right. A large telephone pole marks the top of my driveway. Tan house w/ black trim and red doors; the house sets down off the road. Feel free to park in the driveway, OK to park on the right side of the driveway a little ways onto the grass."

Phone:
Teri Sue's number is 541-343-5028

About This Event:
This is a BYOJ party (Bring Your Own Jars).

I first proposed the idea of the "Community Food Preparation Event " in the August '09 Newsletter. Teri Sue has volunteered her home, and a whole bunch of fat for this event.

I don't know if a "Fat Rendering Party" is a traditional event, but it sounds like something you would be more likely to hear about happening in pioneer days than in modern America. This is not a class so much as a get-together and an opportunity to prepare food in the company of other like-minded people. Experience hands-on participation and discussion about rendering beef, lamb and pork fat into useful lard and tallow.

Children and Guests are Welcome:
This is a child-friendly home. Teri Sue has toys and DVDs for young children.

Host an Event:

Our next potluck is scheduled for March 8, but we still need volunteers to host this potluck. Our potluck meetings are currently scheduled on the second Monday of each month. Let us know if you have suggestions for different day or times, or if you would like to host an upcoming event.

If you would like to host an upcoming Community Event please let us know. Suggested topics include sauerkraut, kimchi, canning, preparing foods for freezing, harvesting fruit or vegetables, making large batches of meatloaf, or anything else we can dream up.

Wise Traditions Conferences
Audio Files

I have frequently wished that all of the sessions at Wise Traditions Conferences were video recorded. We show DVDs at our monthly "Popcorn Review" showings, but there are about four times more audio recordings than DVDs.

In order to share these recordings, I have decided to make this audio player available for rent to local members. It comes with your choice of one or more audio recordings loaded.

There are over 150 presentations. You can view the complete list available on our Audio Recordings page. The small size of this audio player makes it easy to put it into a pocket and listen while walking, cooking, gardening or whenever it is convenient.

Local Member Directory

I would like to offer the space below to local people who wish to make their goods and services known to other local members. If you have a business growing, raising, making or selling food, if you are a health practitioner, or if you coordinate bulk purchases please let us know.

The directory may include such resources as:

  • Farms and ranches
  • WAP-friendly food producers
  • Stores and restaurants
  • Buying Clubs (Contact person for bulk orders)
  • Health Practitioners
  • etc.

Please send any of the following information by email to info@krautpounder.com: business name, contact name, phone, email, web, address, and a BRIEF (no more than 50 words) description of your good or service. Remember that this will be archived on the web, so don't include any personal information that you do not want available.

At present there is no charge for this service. See below for our first listings!
