Local Member Directory

We have made a change to the Local Member Directory (see Local Member Directory below). Up until now, it has been only for people who sell or produce food, health practitioners and the like. It is now it is open to any local members who have a product or service to offer other local people. This change is intended to help support local businesses of all kinds. In these uncertain economic times, wouldn't you prefer to do business with other people who care about traditional and local food?

This means you! You do not need to be a member of the Weston A. Price Foundation, and the Eugene Chapter has no membership dues, so if you are reading this I consider you to be a "member" of our local WAPF community. You are welcome and encouraged to list your goods or service in our directory. We do this as a service to our community.

Potluck and Community Food Preparation Events Hosts

We have volunteers to host the next three potlucks. Make note of the upcoming dates:

  • July 12 at the home of Janet R.
  • August 9 at the home of Sara R.
  • September 13 at the home of Mark H.

I haven't had any volunteers to host our next "Community Food Preparation Event " so, who has a large kitchen or backyard table and would like to host an upcoming Community Event?

Whoever would like to host the potluck in October, or anyone who would like to host a Community Event, please let me know.

Food Exchange

Here is a new idea we are trying out. At the next potluck anyone who would like to participate is encouraged to bring one item of food that you have made or grown. This should be a small amount of food, something you would expect to pay approximately $5 for at a store. Preferably this is something that will keep for at least a week or two. Examples include:

  • Loaf of bread
  • Jar of fermented veggies
  • Bag of soaked (or sprouted) and dried nuts, seeds or grains
  • Jar of fermented veggies
  • Jar of rendered fat
  • etc.

At the potluck everyone who brought something will have the opportunity to trade with someone else.

Participation in this is optional. The purpose of this trade is to take advantage of each other's different skills and interests. It is easier to make a little more of something you are doing already than to make another food from scratch. If you wish to bring more than the suggested $5 value, please package it in two containers, for two separate trades.

Notes on Potlucks:

Eugene Chapter potlucks are a great place to sample traditional foods, and ask questions. People who are new to this way of eating are encouraged to attend.

New to all of this?
For those of you who are new to The Weston A. Price Foundation principles please see the Dietary Guidelines and Characteristics of Traditional Diets for a brief overview, and then get a copy of the book Nourishing Traditions for in-depth information and recipes.

Don't know what to bring?
See the above links for general guidelines about what is recommended by WAPF. Anything from Nourishing Traditions is wonderful, but don't feel it has to be extensive or elaborate. A simple homemade meal made from scratch using natural fats would be a great contribution.

Concerned about cost?
The idea is to bring enough food to feed yourself and whoever else you bring. You do not need to bring enough food to feed 6-12 people unless you are bringing 6-12 people! The idea is for everyone to taste each dish and have enough food to feel satisfied. Yes, real food costs more than boxed/processed/artificial food. The savings are in your health and energy level and the benefit to the ecosystem.

Concerned about time?
Our potlucks are traditionally on Monday evenings. If you have work or school on Mondays, please feel free to make your dish on Sunday and bring it to the event to heat up or assemble if needed.

It is worth the effort!
Hopefully meeting new people who share a passion for good food, asking questions and learning from each other, will make it worth all your time and effort to get to the event.

Suggestions?
Let us know if you have suggestions to make these events more enjoyable.

"The Popcorn Review"

"The Fourfold Approach to Cancer"
Part 2

by Tom Cowan, MD

Friday, July 23, 2010
6:30 to 8:30 PM

Location:
Market of Choice
67 West 29th, Eugene
Upstairs in the Community Room

This is the second part of the DVD we showed in June. This DVD was recorded at the 2009 Wise Traditions Conference.

"An overview of cancer from the perspective of the work of Weston Price. This presentation will include a description of the "true" cause of cancer and explore the shortfalls of conventional diagnosis (including biopsy) and treatment."

Thomas Cowan, MD is a physician in private medical practice in San Francisco, California. He is a frequent lecturer around the country on health and nutrition. His book, The Fourfold Path to Healing, was published in 2004. Dr. Cowan serves on the Board of Directors of The Weston A. Price Foundation. Visit his website at www.fourfoldhealing.com.

Dr. Cowan is a frequent contributor to the Wise Traditions Journal, and if you have never had the opportunity to hear Dr. Cowan speak I highly recommend it. His talks defy easy description, combining medical knowledge and anthroposophy, with an entertaining story-telling style. In this presentation he covers the great questions of what causes cancer, the immune system, the digestive system, the ecological effects of civilization, the future of humanity and much more. Come see for yourself.

Dinner and a Movie:
You are welcome to buy food downstairs in Market of Choice or (shh, don't tell them I told you this) bring something from home to eat in the room.

RSVP:
We need to have at least 5 people RSVP in order to reserve the space at Market of Choice, and there is a maximum of 25 seats available. So I urge you to RSVP ( ) if you think you will be attending. If your plans change, always feel free to just show up.

Cost:
We are requesting a $5-10 donation to the Eugene Chapter at the door.
(No one should miss a showing because of cost, so a sliding scale for low-income people is $1-4 or volunteer to help the Eugene Chapter).

Wise Traditions Conferences
Audio Files

I have frequently wished that all of the sessions at Wise Traditions Conferences were video recorded. We show DVDs at our monthly "Popcorn Review" showings, but there are about four times more audio recordings than DVDs.

In order to share these recordings, I have decided to make this audio player available for rent to local members. It comes with your choice of one or more audio recordings loaded.

There are over 150 presentations. You can view the complete list available on our Audio Recordings page. The small size of this audio player makes it easy to put it into a pocket and listen while walking, cooking, gardening or whenever it is convenient.

Local Member Directory

We would like to offer the space below to local people who wish to make their goods and services known to other local members. This directory is open to all local people receiving this newsletter. You do not need to be a member of the Weston A. Price Foundation, and the Eugene Chapter has no membership dues, so if you are reading this I consider you to be a "member" of our local WAPF community. You are welcome and encouraged to list your goods or service in our directory.

Food producers and health practitioners are encouraged to participate.

  • Farms and ranches
  • WAP-friendly food producers
