Make note of our upcoming potlucks:

  • Aug 9 at the home of Sara R.
  • September 13 at the home of Mark H.
  • October 11 - host needed
  • November 8 - host needed

We need volunteer hosts for October and November. If you are able to host the potluck, but not on the specified date, please suggest an alternate date. Anyone who would like to host a Community Event, please let me know.

Local Member Directory and WAPFEugene

I would like to continue to encourage everyone to check out, and consider listing yourselves in the Local Member Directory (see Local Member Directory below). It is now it is open to any local members who have a product or service to offer other local people.

I would also like to remind everyone that the Eugene Chapter, WAPF has a list on Yahoo Groups, called WAPFEugene. This is a place for local people who are interested in the principals of the Weston A. Price Foundation to communicate with each other.

To join go to: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/WAPFEugene/ Select "Join This Group" and follow the instructions.

Weston A. Price Foundation Website

As many of you know, the Weston A. Price Foundation launched a newly designed website recently (www.westonaprice.org). It looks nice, but ever since then we have had trouble with old links not working. The search engine at the site also makes it difficult to find specific articles. Old links were supposed to automatically forward to new locations, but this hasn't turned out as planned (Error 404). I have tried to update many of the links in this newsletter, but I know I have not fixed all of them yet. It is very frustrating, but I have it on good authority that they are working on the problem. If you are looking for some really great articles I suggest searching the Health Topics page as a starting point. Thank you for your patience.

Chicken Feed

Our local WAPF chapter is interested in making a group purchase early in August of Soy Free BROILER feed from Union Point Feed in Brownsville. It is not organic but is GMO-free, fresh ground WHOLE grains (w/fish meal, kelp, etc.) and local. The cost is estimated to be about $20. per 50lb bag of feed. We have to have a minimum of 1000lbs ordered. So far in our group we have 400 lbs spoken for.

Note: Broiler feed should not be fed to layers as the protein is too high and the calcium is too low. (If you are interested in a similar group buy for Layer Feed please email Julia. Again it will be 1000lb minimum for a group buy price estimate the same).

If you or anyone you know is interested in this group buy please contact Julia our food co-op organizer at

Blueberry Picking

My son and I will be going blueberry picking at McKenzie River Farm, in Leaburg, once or twice this month. They have biodynamic u-pick and picked blueberries, and other farm produce. We will be leaving South Eugene around 4:15 PM (date to be determined). If you would like to ride out with us, let me know.

Teacher Dogs

There is now a tribute to my beloved dog Ashke at the AuNaturalK9s Teacher Dog page (scroll down). Read the beautiful, inspiring and touching tributes to other Teacher Dogs at this site. Be asured, I will let you all know when my next perfect dog comes into my life. Until then continue to keep your eyes open in your travels around Oregon. When you see any puppies or young dogs looking for their new home please email: .

August Events:

Meeting & Potluck Dinner

Monday, August 9, 2010
6:00 to 8:00 PM

Location:
At the home of Sara R.
2455 Emerald Alley, Eugene
(just south of the university)

Directions:
From the corner of 24th and Hilyard, go East on 24th about 5 blocks. Pass University Ave, and Onyx Street. Turn right at the first alley after Onyx (it is unmarked). 2445 Emerald Alley is a big house on the left with a stone wall in front. It is about half way down the alley.

Please park on 24th or 25th street because there won't be room for everyone in front of the house.

Phone:
Sara's number is 541-345-6770

Bring a Dish
Please bring a Nourishing Traditions style dish and join us for some great food and great conversation! Families and guests are welcome. Please bring enough food to feed the size of your party, and your recipe on a 3x5 card or notepaper.

Food Exchange:
Here is a new idea we are trying out. Anyone who would like to participate is encouraged to bring one item of food that you have made or grown. This should be a small amount of food, something you would expect to pay approximately $5 for at a store. Preferably this is something that will keep for at least a week or two. Examples include:

  • Loaf of bread
  • Jar of fermented veggies
  • Bag of soaked (or sprouted) and dried nuts, seeds or grains
  • Jar of fermented veggies
  • Jar of rendered fat
  • etc.

Everyone who brings something will have the opportunity to trade with someone else.

Participation in this is optional. The purpose of this trade is to take advantage of each other's different skills and interests. It is easier to make a little more of something you are doing already than to make another food from scratch. If you wish to bring more than the suggested $5 value, please package it in two containers, for two separate trades.

RSVP:
We appreciate an RSVP (info@krautpounder.com) if you think you will be attending so that we have a rough idea of how many people to expect, but feel free to just show up.

Notes on Potlucks:

Eugene Chapter potlucks are a great place to sample traditional foods, and ask questions. People who are new to this way of eating are encouraged to attend.

New to all of this?
For those of you who are new to The Weston A. Price Foundation principles please see the Dietary Guidelines and Characteristics of Traditional Diets for a brief overview, and then get a copy of the book Nourishing Traditions for in-depth information and recipes.

Don't know what to bring?
See the above links for general guidelines about what is recommended by WAPF. Anything from Nourishing Traditions is wonderful, but don't feel it has to be extensive or elaborate. A simple homemade meal made from scratch using natural fats would be a great contribution.

Concerned about cost?
The idea is to bring enough food to feed yourself and whoever else you bring. You do not need to bring enough food to feed 6-12 people unless you are bringing 6-12 people! The idea is for everyone to taste each dish and have enough food to feel satisfied. Yes, real food costs more than boxed/processed/artificial food. The savings are in your health and energy level and the benefit to the ecosystem.

Concerned about time?
Our potlucks are traditionally on Monday evenings. If you have work or school on Mondays, please feel free to make your dish on Sunday and bring it to the event to heat up or assemble if needed.

It is worth the effort!
Hopefully meeting new people who share a passion for good food, asking questions and learning from each other, will make it worth all your time and effort to get to the event.

Suggestions?
Let us know if you have suggestions to make these events more enjoyable.

"The Popcorn Review"

"Cod Liver Oil: Our Number One Superfood"

by Chris Masterjohn

Friday, August 20, 2010
DVD begins at 6:30 (ends approximately at 8:30 PM)
Discussion time before and after movie - 6:00 to 9:00 PM

Location:
Market of Choice
67 West 29th, Eugene
Upstairs in the Community Room

We have had such interesting conversations before and after the last couple of DVDs that I have decided to offer more time for discussion. We will have the room available from 6:00 to 9:00. You are welcome to buy food downstairs in Market of Choice or (shh, don't tell them I told you this) bring something from home to eat in the room.

This DVD was recorded at the 2009 Wise Traditions Conference.

"Cod liver oil has been used for centuries for medicinal purposes and to strengthen general health. Physicians and scientists have used it to prevent and treat tooth decay, eye and bone diseases resulting from deficiencies of vitamins A and D, infectious diseases and rheumatism, and during the twentieth century it saved millions of dollars of productivity for American industry by reducing absenteeism. This valuable superfood has recently come under attack because of its high vitamin A content, accused of increasing mortality, raising the risk of infectious disease, causing osteoporosis and antagonizing the beneficial effects of vitamin D. Vitamins A and D should be seen, however, not as antagonists but as partners. By providing these partners together, cod liver oil used in moderate quantities makes a valuable addition to a healthy, traditional diet."

Chris Masterjohn is the creator and editor of Cholesterol-And-Health.Com, a web site dedicated to extolling the benefits of cholesterol and cholesterol-rich foods. He is a frequent contributor to Wise Traditions, the quarterly journal of the Weston A. Price Foundation. He has published two peer-reviewed publications, including a hypothesis on the molecular mechanism of vitamin D toxicity. His primary interest is the interaction between the fat-soluble vitamins, especially vitamins A, D and K. He holds a BA in History from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and is currently pursuing his PhD in Nutritional Science with a specialty in Biochemical and Molecular Nutrition at the University of Connecticut.

Links:
www.cholesterol-and-health.com
www.westonaprice.org/cod-liver-oil.html

RSVP:
We need to have at least 5 people RSVP in order to reserve the space at Market of Choice, and there is a maximum of 25 seats available. So I urge you to RSVP ( ) if you think you will be attending. If your plans change, always feel free to just show up.

Cost:
We are requesting a $5-10 donation to the Eugene Chapter at the door.
(No one should miss a showing because of cost, so a sliding scale for low-income people is $1-4 or volunteer to help the Eugene Chapter).

Community Food Preparation Event

Fermentation Party

Saturday, August 28, 2010 SUNDAY, August 29, 2010
1:30 to 3:30 PM
Location:
At the home of Dr. Teri Sue Wright, DVM
2919 McKendrick St.
(in south Eugene)

I first proposed the idea of the "Community Food Preparation Event " in the August '09 Newsletter. We held an "Old Fashioned Fat Rendering Party" in February. Our local holistic veterinarian, Teri Sue Wright, has volunteered her home once again.

This time we will be making sauerkraut, kimchi, pickled garlic, ginger carrots, pickled cucumbers, fruit chutney, or other fermentations.

How it works:
During the first half hour there will be an overview of lacto-fermentation and instructions. The rest of the time will be spent, chopping, pounding, learning, talking, laughing and maybe taking some photos (we have bloggers on the loose!).

This is not a class!
It is a BYOI (Bring Your Own Ingredients) party! Everyone is encouraged to choose a recipe that you would like to make. Bring all of your own ingredients, such as vegetables, or fruit, salt, whey or probiotics (we will have salt, whey and probiotics available) and jars. We will have a few knives, Kraut Pounders and cutting boards, however a few more good knives or boards might be helpful. We will provide the space and experienced fermenters of whom to ask questions. Most of all this is an opportunity to gather with other like-minded folk, ask all of your fermentation questions and talk about food.

Directions:

"South Chambers straight through the 28th Street intersection (blinking light). Take a right onto McLean (3rd street passed that intersection). Take the 1st right on McKendrick. My house is about 8 houses down (1/2 way) on the right. A large telephone pole marks the top of my driveway. Tan house w/ black trim and red doors; the house sets down off the road. Feel free to park in the driveway, OK to park on the right side of the driveway a little ways onto the grass."

Phone:
Teri Sue's number is 541-343-5028

Children and Guests are Welcome:
This is a child-friendly home. Teri Sue has toys and DVDs for young children.

Recipes for fermented vegetables can be found in Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon Morrell, Wild Fermentation by Sandor Katz, in the Sept '07 Newsletter, and online.

Cost:
There is no charge for this event. Donations to the Eugene Chapter are always gratefully accepted.

Wise Traditions Conferences
Audio Files

I have frequently wished that all of the sessions at Wise Traditions Conferences were video recorded. We show DVDs at our monthly "Popcorn Review" showings, but there are about four times more audio recordings than DVDs.

In order to share these recordings, I have decided to make this audio player available for rent to local members. It comes with your choice of one or more audio recordings loaded.

There are over 150 presentations. You can view the complete list available on our Audio Recordings page. The small size of this audio player makes it easy to put it into a pocket and listen while walking, cooking, gardening or whenever it is convenient.

Local Member Directory

We would like to offer the space below to local people who wish to make their goods and services known to other local members. This directory is open to all local people receiving this newsletter. This directory is intended to encourage support of local businesses of all kinds. In these uncertain economic times, wouldn't you prefer to do business with other people who care about traditional and local food?

You do not need to be a member of the Weston A. Price Foundation, and the Eugene Chapter has no membership dues, so if you are reading this I consider you to be a "member" of our local WAPF community. You are welcome and encouraged to list your goods or service in our directory.

Food producers and health practitioners are encouraged to participate.

  • Farms and ranches
  • WAP-friendly food producers
  • Stores and restaurants
  • Buying Clubs (Contact person for bulk orders)
  • Health Practitioners
  • etc.

Please send any of the following information by email to : business name, contact name, phone, email, web, address, and a BRIEF (50-80 words) description of your good or service. Remember that this will be archived on the web, so don't include any personal information that you do not want available.

There is no charge for listing in the directory. We do it as a service to our community. See below for listings!
