From the Editor:August Events:There are lots of things happening this month. Check out all the events!
Autumn Potluck Hosts NeededMake note of our upcoming potlucks:
We need volunteer hosts for October and November. If you are able to host the potluck, but not on the specified date, please suggest an alternate date. Anyone who would like to host a Community Event, please let me know. Local Member Directory and WAPFEugeneI would like to continue to encourage everyone to check out, and consider listing yourselves in the Local Member Directory (see Local Member Directory below). It is now it is open to any local members who have a product or service to offer other local people.
I would also like to remind everyone that the Eugene Chapter, WAPF has a list on Yahoo Groups, called WAPFEugene. This is a place for local people who are interested in the principals of the Weston A. Price Foundation to communicate with each other. To join go to: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/WAPFEugene/ Select "Join This Group" and follow the instructions. Weston A. Price Foundation WebsiteAs many of you know, the Weston A. Price Foundation launched a newly designed website recently (www.westonaprice.org). It looks nice, but ever since then we have had trouble with old links not working. The search engine at the site also makes it difficult to find specific articles. Old links were supposed to automatically forward to new locations, but this hasn't turned out as planned (Error 404). I have tried to update many of the links in this newsletter, but I know I have not fixed all of them yet. It is very frustrating, but I have it on good authority that they are working on the problem. If you are looking for some really great articles I suggest searching the Health Topics page as a starting point. Thank you for your patience. Chicken FeedOur local WAPF chapter is interested in making a group purchase early in August of Soy Free BROILER feed from Union Point Feed in Brownsville. It is not organic but is GMO-free, fresh ground WHOLE grains (w/fish meal, kelp, etc.) and local. The cost is estimated to be about $20. per 50lb bag of feed. We have to have a minimum of 1000lbs ordered. So far in our group we have 400 lbs spoken for. Note: Broiler feed should not be fed to layers as the protein is too high and the calcium is too low. (If you are interested in a similar group buy for Layer Feed please email Julia. Again it will be 1000lb minimum for a group buy price estimate the same). If you or anyone you know is interested in this group buy please contact Julia our food co-op organizer at Blueberry PickingMy son and I will be going blueberry picking at McKenzie River Farm, in Leaburg, once or twice this month. They have biodynamic u-pick and picked blueberries, and other farm produce. We will be leaving South Eugene around 4:15 PM (date to be determined). If you would like to ride out with us, let me know. Teacher DogsThere is now a tribute to my beloved dog Ashke at the AuNaturalK9s Teacher Dog page (scroll down). Read the beautiful, inspiring and touching tributes to other Teacher Dogs at this site. Be asured, I will let you all know when my next perfect dog comes into my life. Until then continue to keep your eyes open in your travels around Oregon. When you see any puppies or young dogs looking for their new home please email: . ~ Lisa Return to top of page August Events:Meeting & Potluck DinnerMonday, August 9, 2010 Directions: Please park on 24th or 25th street because there won't be room for everyone in front of the house. Phone: Bring a Dish Food Exchange:
Everyone who brings something will have the opportunity to trade with someone else. Participation in this is optional. The purpose of this trade is to take advantage of each other's different skills and interests. It is easier to make a little more of something you are doing already than to make another food from scratch. If you wish to bring more than the suggested $5 value, please package it in two containers, for two separate trades. RSVP: Notes on Potlucks:Eugene Chapter potlucks are a great place to sample traditional foods, and ask questions. People who are new to this way of eating are encouraged to attend. New to all of this? Don't know what to bring? Concerned about cost? Concerned about time? It is worth the effort! Suggestions? "The Popcorn Review""Cod Liver Oil: Our Number One Superfood"by Chris MasterjohnFriday, August 20, 2010 We have had such interesting conversations before and after the last couple of DVDs that I have decided to offer more time for discussion. We will have the room available from 6:00 to 9:00. You are welcome to buy food downstairs in Market of Choice or (shh, don't tell them I told you this) bring something from home to eat in the room. This DVD was recorded at the 2009 Wise Traditions Conference.
"Cod liver oil has been used for centuries for medicinal purposes and to strengthen general health. Physicians and scientists have used it to prevent and treat tooth decay, eye and bone diseases resulting from deficiencies of vitamins A and D, infectious diseases and rheumatism, and during the twentieth century it saved millions of dollars of productivity for American industry by reducing absenteeism. This valuable superfood has recently come under attack because of its high vitamin A content, accused of increasing mortality, raising the risk of infectious disease, causing osteoporosis and antagonizing the beneficial effects of vitamin D. Vitamins A and D should be seen, however, not as antagonists but as partners. By providing these partners together, cod liver oil used in moderate quantities makes a valuable addition to a healthy, traditional diet."
Links: RSVP: Cost: Community Food Preparation EventFermentation PartySaturday, August 28, 2010 SUNDAY, August 29, 2010 I first proposed the idea of the "Community Food Preparation Event " in the August '09 Newsletter. We held an "Old Fashioned Fat Rendering Party" in February. Our local holistic veterinarian, Teri Sue Wright, has volunteered her home once again. This time we will be making sauerkraut, kimchi, pickled garlic, ginger carrots, pickled cucumbers, fruit chutney, or other fermentations. How it works: This is not a class! Directions: "South Chambers straight through the 28th Street intersection (blinking light). Take a right onto McLean (3rd street passed that intersection). Take the 1st right on McKendrick. My house is about 8 houses down (1/2 way) on the right. A large telephone pole marks the top of my driveway. Tan house w/ black trim and red doors; the house sets down off the road. Feel free to park in the driveway, OK to park on the right side of the driveway a little ways onto the grass."
Phone: Children and Guests are Welcome: Recipes for fermented vegetables can be found in Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon Morrell, Wild Fermentation by Sandor Katz, in the Sept '07 Newsletter, and online. Cost: DVD Re-Run"Cod Liver Oil: Our Number One Superfood"by Chris MasterjohnFriday, August 31, 2010 Julia has graciously volunteered her house for showing re-runs of our DVDs. This is for people who are not able to attend our regular Friday night showing. This is a re-run of the Aug 20 DVD showing Directions: RSVP: Cost: Please Send FeedbackWhat do you think of the Eugene Chapter events? What events you would like to attend? What do you think of our current schedule? Our potlucks are the second Monday of each month and DVDs are on either the third or fourth Friday? What days/times work best for you? (Note: If you like our current schedule be sure to vote for it, because if there are more suggestions for another day we might change it!) Local Member DirectoryWe would like to offer the space below to local people who wish to make their goods and services known to other local members. This directory is open to all local people receiving this newsletter. This directory is intended to encourage support of local businesses of all kinds. In these uncertain economic times, wouldn't you prefer to do business with other people who care about traditional and local food? You do not need to be a member of the Weston A. Price Foundation, and the Eugene Chapter has no membership dues, so if you are reading this I consider you to be a "member" of our local WAPF community. You are welcome and encouraged to list your goods or service in our directory. Food producers and health practitioners are encouraged to participate.
Please send any of the following information by email to : business name, contact name, phone, email, web, address, and a BRIEF (50-80 words) description of your good or service. Remember that this will be archived on the web, so don't include any personal information that you do not want available. There is no charge for listing in the directory. We do it as a service to our community. See below for listings! |
